Storwell Self Storage Scarborough now holds on-line storage unit auctions on eBay.
The Hot new TV program Auction Hunters made its debut on Spike TV at 10:00 AM Tuesday November 9, 2010 is fuelled by all of us who ever dreamed of finding a “buried” treasure, be it a cache of Spanish doubloons washed up on a Caribbean beach or a rare Tiffany lamp hidden away in grandma’s attic.
Now there’s another way to potentially “strike it rich” – by buying the contents of a storage unit at one of the auctions held regularly at self storage facilities across North America, including here at Storwell Self Storage Scarborough.
Although it is never our preference to seize and sell a unit’s contents, occasionally a customer will abandon it rather than pay outstanding storage fees. While some self storage facilities arrange public auctions on-site, at Storwell in Scarborough we’re selling the abandoned goods on a complete lot basis on eBay instead.
A video of the front of the open storage unit is shown on the Storwell public self storage auctions page, with a brief description of what is visible in the unit. Bids for the contents can then be made on eBay, with payment through PayPal.
Of course, many boxes and bags are sealed, so there are indeed “secret” treasures that can be revealed only when the buyer drags out all the stuff to see exactly what their bid as bought them. After reputedly coming across a stash of $65,000 worth of South African Krugerrands in a unit whose contents he won at auction, Glendon Cameron is now the self-proclaimed “Storage Auction Guru” with a book, blog and videos telling people how they too can make some serious $$$ at storage unit auctions.
He has gathered a wide group of followers that prove storage auction hounds are actually a sub-culture all their own, often boasting how a $100 bid yielded them thousands of dollars worth of goods (which a lot of bidders turn around and sell on eBay or at flea markets).
Some people just enjoy gambling … and taking a risk on whether their winning bid will wind up being trash or treasure once they’ve made their way though the unit. One way or the other, auction winners are generally given 48 hours to clear the contents from the storage unit.
As the mainstream media being to take notice, storage unit auctions are growing more and more popular everyday. Check them out for yourself…and put in a bid! View our latest eBay auction listing here.
