Looking for public storage? We have three convenient locations in the greater Toronto area: Toronto West, Toronto East, & Mississauga.
The first public storage was developed by B. Wayne Hughes back in 1971 and has since become a part of life for millions of people across the planet. As a result of the expansion of our consumer based society the need for public storage has grown exponentially over the 40 years since its inception. People often wonder what is in all those public storage lockers that seem to spring up like mushrooms along the highway side. Aside from the typical local contractors that store tools and materials or corporate entities storing business goods and files, the majority are residential uses, members of the public storing their surplus personal items. I often muse that people are storing their dreams in public storage units, grandma’s dining room suite that they will one day refinish or that old ford mustang that will one day be an antique.
In 1994 Surguard Storage Centers expanded the public storage genre into the European market in a significant way by opening facilities in six countries over the following two years. It seems their instincts were well founded as the demand for public storage was even greater than in North America. It seems that due to the close living quarters and tendency to collect things the availability of flexible short term rental storage space was a big hit in the European market.
At times these public storage lockers become abandoned and the contents must be disposed of by public auction. This has over the past year caught the attention of reality TV scene, spawning not less than three prime time television series. Most notably Auction Hunters on Spike TV and Storage Wars on A&E. This has driven the awareness of public storage to a frenzy level as thousands of bidders descend on these auctions hoping to get lucky on a storage auction locker buy.
The original public storage company is now a real estate investment trust which is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PSA. You may even be a share holder through your pension fund. It operates over 2200 properties and is one of the largest landlords around the globe.
